Art and Activism

Graduate School of Humanities, University of Amsterdam
The 21st century is arguably witness to new forms of experimentation at the crossroads of art and politics, resulting in artists leaving their traditional spaces and entering into other public terrains on the one side, as well as political activists choosing creative, art-like forms of protest and intervention on the other. Art and activism intertwine in complex ways, raising several topical questions such as how they can be analyzed, how they may be understood transnationally in the era of globalization, and what concepts the humanities may provide in grasping these events, actions, campaigns, interventions and movements.

This website stems from the MA module, titled Art and Activism, in the Graduate School of Humanities at the University of Amsterdam. The course's objective was to study how art and activism interplay in the public sphere, demaning a discussion between a wide range of disciplines. The primary focus was on artistic approaches to activism from theatre / performance art and (other) visual art, as well as addressing contemporary theoretical debates and modes of framing emergent forms of activist art. This website serves as a platform to feature and archive students' creative group projects, consisting of podcasts and videos, that reflect on topics and questions that stem from the course.
